Well we're on the final countdown to Thanksgiving and it is going to be a busy few days. I have about 47 committed souls coming for dinner. I revised the menu a little: 2 turkeys, ham, dressing, mashed potatoes and gravy, candied sweet potatoes, scalloped oysters, cranberries, green beans, fordhook lima beans, corn pudding, frog-eye fruit salad, relish tray, jello salad, red cabbage and homemade hot rolls. Desserts will be 4 pumpkin pies, 2 pecan pies, 2 lemon meringue pies, 1 mincement, boiled raisin cake, applesauce cake with hot milk frosting and turkey cutout cookies. Jeri is making mashed potatoes, pumpkin pies and pecan pies. Liz is making jello salad and nut cups. Dana is putting together relish tray. I am making all the rest. I have most of the shopping done but will run into town Tuesday am and get the last minute stuff. We'll set up all the tables and decorate Wednesday evening. Hans and Shawntell have to work Thanksgiving day so Phill and I will have Carley. She is such a good baby so not expecting any problems. We are going to eat at 4 pm and they don't get off work until 5 so guess they'll have to do the warmup routine. Of course if we get it all together by 4 it will be a miracle.
Took Phill to ENT doctor last week and he ordered a needle biopsy by his ear also said the CT scan of the neck showed some nodules in his thyroid. We were supposed to have the biopsy last Tuesday but when we got there the doctor wouldn't do it until he is off the coumadin and on lovenox. We are waiting for the PC Dr. to make those arrangements. Also saw the oncologist for the colon cancer and he said everything still looks good, don't have to go back for 6 months this time.
Phill had his birthday on the 12th and on the same day his little yorkshire terrier Tinker died. Tink would have been 15 in Dec. It sure has been hard on Phill as that dog sat in his lap 24/7. The house is so quiet that it is a little eerie. Georgie never barks and he sure misses Tink.
The garden is kaput...froze hard a few days ago. We were still picking tomatoes and peppers. Gonna miss those good tomatoes, my herbs are more protected and they haven't frozen yet. Maybe they can handle colder weather.
Hope everyone has a great Thanksgiving!!!
This blog is for family and friends to keep up with our comings and goings. We will also post favorite recipes, desert gardening tips and hints, craft and quilting projects, etc. We live in an old mining town 35 miles southwest of Las Vegas, NV. The town has a population of approximately 250 brave souls. We have lived here 40 years and have learned alot about having a successful garden in the high desert. I do alot of baking, cooking, canning, quilting, sewing, tole painting and most needlework. We have wonderful mountain views, wild horses, old mines, miles and miles of trails and just a wonderful rural experience close to a large city. Life couldn't be better!!!

Goodsprings Historical Sign
Wahoo..The Centennial Committee finally got the new historic marker in place and we unvieled it yesterday. We also had our art exhibit. Everything went great. Good crowd, interesting people, good food, etc. We started early 6:30 am to get everything set up for 9:30 am showtime. We were rushed but got it spiffed right up and looking good. We had alot of former residents show up. Mike, Mary and Teresa Carlo came over from Pahrump, I hadn't seen Mike and Mary for 10 years. They've promised to come back on the 14th for our bingo fundraiser. We had some great paintings on display, also some etchings and some limited edition prints. Dorothy Wright donated a Lucille Bruner water color of the Goodsprings School to the Goodsprings Historical Society. On display we had some Bruner, Jo Harding, Vivian Woods, Purcell etchings, Brent Thompson print, Jane Fleming, Mary Ellen Schwartz and some I was not familiar with. All very good. After a quick take down and clean up it was home for a quick nap.
After our nap I had to hurry and make some stroganoff for a potato bar supper at the Hendersons. We have a monthly get together and eat good stuff. I was stuffed when we got home. We had a nice visit with everyone. Sorry Mark didn't make it but I'm sure he was having a great time in AZ with Christy and the kids. Next month at Mark and Terry's and I've forgotten what we are featuring..guess I better make a call or two and find out what I need to make.

Update
After a year I guess an update is needed. We are both fine, Phill is holding his own and seems to be doing okay. Life has been hectic, lots of doings with the town, school and historical society.
We had a big reception when the plaque was placed on the school announcing that the school is now on the National Register of Historic Places. This was done on 9/15/09, I cooked for 5 days getting everything ready. We decided to go a little fancy and do it up like a high tea. I fixed cucumber sandwiches, curried chicken salad sands, waldorf chicken salad sands, egg salad sands, hot artichoke and crab dip, zucchini cheese squares, smoked salmon pinwheels, fresh salsa & chips, pate and assorted olives and pickles (which included the infamous Rawlinson pickled beets). On the dessert side I made petite almond cookies, Russian teacakes, fresh fruit salsa with cinnamon and sugar chips, cream puffs with hazelnut filling and lots of strawberries dipped in chocolate. I baked croissants for the chicken salad sandwiches and Russian black bread for the egg salad. We used antique serving dishes and lots of silver and so forth. Everyone thought it was a great spread, good program and fun was had by all.
We are doing another program tomorrow to unveil the new sign placed in the park by the Clark County Centennial Committee. For everyone that doesn't know, Clark County was formed from Lincoln County in 1909 making this our 100th birthday. We aren't putting on a big spread this time, just coffee, juice and danish. I was going to make some Swedish Kringle but just didn't have the time, so everyone will have to do with bakery products instead of homemade. We are also having an art exhibit of paintings done of Goodsprings. Our little town has been a favorite for Nevada artists for years. We had the school children draw pictures of Goodsprings which we will also exhibit.
On the 14th we will have our annual bingo fundraiser for the school. We have lots of nice donated prizes and the final game will be a Wal-mart $75 gift card. I am going to miss all the great help from Julie Newberry this year, as she will be out of town. Hope we have lots of people. Last year we made enough to send the kids on 2 field trips and do the annual Christmas with Santa. Santa has been coming to the school with gifts for all the children including preschoolers every year since 1913. We for sure want to keep up this tradition.
Thanksgiving is right around the corner and we will be doing it at the Community Center for any and all that want to come. Last year we had about 40 and this year we already have about 45 saying they'll be there. I am doing 2 turkeys and a ham plus all the trimmings. Jeri Pinkerton is going to do some of the pies this year. I've already started making rolls and putting in the freezer so I'll only have to thaw, proof and bake on the big day. We'll also have mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes, dressing, gravy, green beans, red cabbage, brussel sprouts, scalloped oysters, rolls and lots of pies and a boiled raisin cake. Yum Yum can't wait.
Phill and I went to Scottsdale in October to visit Val and her family. We enjoyed ourselves and had lots of good food. The kids are growing up so fast. Bob, Chloe and I went out looking at all the yard sales and I didn't buy a thing. Unbelievable!! Hope to get back down there around Chloe's birthday on Dec. 3. Missed seeing Christy and her family. Heath was working in New Mexico for a few weeks so she took the kids over to see him and they all went to Carlsbad Caverns. She'll be here in Goodsprings for Christmas, can't wait to see them. Also speaking of birthdays, today is my David boys 31st. Hope he had a great day.
I am still working on my cookbook and hope to get it done soon, also the songbook with all of Gram's favorites that she had written out in little books. Belinda wants me to help her make another gingerbread house this year, so guess we'll go out to Pahrump and see what we come up with this year. I've made all the houses I want so now I just supervise.
Well it is 11:30 pm and I have to be up by 5:00 am so guess I'll close for now.
